Emergency Medical Services
 

One of the goals of the City of Seguin Fire Department is to provide an advanced level of emergency medical care to patients as soon as possible. This level of care begins with the first unit on scene. Each ambulance and engine has the capability to perform advanced level medical care. The capabilities of these units include early defibrillation, IV therapy, advanced airway management, and initial treatment of injuries.

Advanced Life Support
Seguin Fire Department provides medical care to the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) level. Ambulances deliver care to this level while engine companies provide care at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level. The MICU level care is accomplished by providing several advanced level skills in the field.

These advanced life support skills include:

  • Defibrillation
  • Cardioversion
  • Pacing
  • 12-Lead & 4-Lead ECG/EKG Interpretation
  • CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
  • IV Therapy
  • IO (Intraosseous) Access / EZ-IO
  • Medication Administration
  • Advanced Airway Management (Intubation)
  • Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (PASG/MAST)
  • Chest Decompression
  • Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI)
  • Pain Management

EMS Transport
Seguin Fire Department transports patients primarily to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. Seguin Fire Department on occation transports patients to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital New Braunfels and Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC / San Marcos) The choice of medical facilities is directed by EMS Treatment Protocols. The decision of which hospital to transport the patient to is based on patient preference, patient condition, and the closeness of the facility.

EMS Protocol Development
The Medical Director for Seguin Fire Department develops the EMS Treatment Protocols with the recomendations of the protocol committee. The development incorporates many national standards such as the United States Department of Transportation's Paramedic Curriculum, the American Heart Association's Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians' Prehosiptal Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).

The purpose of these EMS Treatment Protocols is to provide EMS personnel with guidelines to assess, treat, and transport patients with a wide variety of medical problems and traumatic injuries.
